This series consists of correspondence, reports, memoranda, photographs, clippings, appointment calendars, briefing books, and other records of Joseph J. Sisco. Sisco served as a foreign affairs officer from 1951 to 1965, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 1965 to 1969, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs from 1969 to 1974, and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 1974 to 1976. Included are records relating to negotiations over the crisis in the Middle East from 1973 to 1976, U.S.-Soviet relations, the Cyprus crisis in 1974, and the Angolan crisis in 1975. Topics also include Sisco's testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Turkish narcotics, Icelandic base negotiations, and the visit of Henry Kissinger to Egypt and Israel.

Joseph John Sisco was born October 31, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 1941 and served in the United States Army in the Pacific during World War II. He returned to academic studies at the University of Chicago after the war. In 1950 he joined the Central Intelligence Agency before moving to the Department of State to serve as a foreign affairs officer in 1951.
